New research demonstrates that lobsters experience genuine pain when boiled alive, challenging traditional cooking methods.
Scientists studying Norway lobsters discovered that human painkillers including aspirin and lidocaine significantly reduced the animals’ frantic tail-flip responses during electrical shocks. This suggests crustaceans feel actual pain rather than simply reacting to muscle stimulation.
Study co-author Lynne Sneddon from the University of Gothenburg stated “Based on scientific evidence, it is not humane to boil crustaceans alive” and noted “we would never accept boiling a cow or chicken alive.”
Multiple nations have already banned live boiling, including Norway, New Zealand, and Austria. Researchers are exploring electrical stunning as a humane alternative.
